Hertfordshire Squash Championships 2006/07 RESULTS & Report

This years event was held at Broxbourne Squash Club on 20-21 January 2007.

The Men's Championship
History was made when 17 year old junior star Adrian Waller from Potters Bar Squash Club became the youngest ever winner of the Hertfordshire Mens Squash Championships. He beat Adam Fuller (Berkhamsted) 3-9 9-5 8-10 10-8 9-3 in 70 minutes of top class squash. Adam started well controlling the rallies and pace of the game, too much for Adrian but in the second game Adrian composed himself and started to dominate the T, for the next 3 games the big crowd witnessed some excellent and exciting rallies that saw both players showing great agility to cover all four corners of the court and demonstrating exceptional racket skills.

Adrian held off a spirited attack from Adam in the fourth game to take the match into a decider, Adrian got off to a great start playing superb length shots and tight to the wall drop shots forcing errors out of Adam, at 8-1 down Adam saved several match balls and clawed his way back to 8-3 but Adrian was not to be denied and won the game 9-3 to take his first senior title.

Adam's younger brother Jonathan did well to beat Chris Dawson (Broxbourne) 9-7 in the fifth before going down 3-0 to Adrian in the quarter-finals, in the semi's Adrian beat Keith Timms (Broxbourne) 9-7 9-7 9-7.

The Mens 'B' event was a round robin affair with Aron Toms (Royston) a class apart from the rest, Rhys Thomas (Gosling) was runner-up.

The Mens 'C' Tournament was a keenly contested affair with a full draw made up of players from Herts Division 4 & 5. 14 year old Nathan Derrick (R3 Stevenage) did very well and prevented the Final from becoming a family affair by beating 17 year old Will Blower (Bishop's Stortford) 3-1 in the semi-finals, Will's father Ian (Bishop's Stortford) beat Adam Grilli (Harlow) 3-1 in their semi-final before using his wealth of experience to outlast Nathan in the Final beating him 3-1.

The Mens 'A' Plate was won by Chris Dawson who beat Adam Edge (Knebworth) 3-0, Adam had earlier beaten Phil Jenkins (Next Generation) in a 5 game thriller and Richard Bull (Gosling) in the quarter-finals, Unfortunately for Richard he had to retire in the fourth game of that match with a suspected snapped Achilles tendon and had to be taken to hospital. Wishing you a speedy recovery Richard!

The Mens 'C' Plate was won by Andy Davis (Harlow) who beat Louis Drakes (R3 Stevenage) 3-0 in the Final.

The Mens Over 35 Plate was won by Dominic Webster (Knebworth), he beat Martin White (Gosling) 3-0 after Martin had valiantly overcome Kieran Todd (GSK) 9-7 in the fifth in the semi-final.

However, in arguably the best and closest match of the weekend Paul Drakes beat Howard Gregory (Harpenden) 9-7 9-10 10-8 6-9 9-7 in an epic quarter-final encounter that also endured a change of court.
