After a tense weekend (May 6/7) the
Herts County U-13 Girls’ team became National Champions for the first
time. The squad of four had battled through two earlier weekends to earn
their place in the finals, held at the Kingswood Squash Club in Basildon.
With Yorkshire defeating S.E.Wales in the other semi-final, Herts took on
Warwicks on the Saturday. Brogan Lane produced a conclusive 3-0
performance to give the team a flying start and top string Jemma Ockwell
sealed victory in straight games. With their place in the final assured,
number 2 Anna Bradly battled bravely despite breathing difficulties but
lost in straight games.
With Anna still a little below par and having to face a player ranked well
above her on the England ranking list, it was crucial that Herts won at
number three in the final. Although a close encounter was predicted nobody
could have expected the drama that was to unfold, as fortunes swung one
way and then the other. Twice Brogan had to battle back to level at 2-2 in
games and then save 3 match points before finally triumphing 10-9 in the
final game.Next was the turn of Jemma to take on last year’s U-13 England
number 1, and she produced a superb performance to sweep to victory and
secure the trophy. With the final won the 2nd string match and the friendly
between Jessica Foster and the Yorkshire reserve were both won by
Yorkshire but the celebrations had already begun!!Team manager Julian
Craxton paid tribute to the efforts of all 4 girls as well as the support
shown by their parents.
