The Herts U19 Team travelled to Norfolk for this Stage 2 event of the England Squash Inter-County Championships and took on Norfolk for our first tie. James Mackay went straight to work and disposed of his opponent in an efficient manner to notch up our first match win. On the other court, regrettably, Phil Judd was on the receiving end of the same treatment by a more experienced player, to level the ties at 1-all. Herts players won the remaining strings at 1, 2 and 4 without the loss of a game. Bradley Wiles, played extremely well with passion and determination at the reserve position, number 6 string, to win 3 – 1. Herts therefore won their 1st tie against Norfolk by 4 matches to 1 and acquired 17 points. After lunch, we faced the top-seed side Sussex. Ben Andrews entertained the crowd to a thrilling 5-setter which saw him lose the 3rd 10/9 to go 2-1 down and then fight back and take the crucial 4th 10/8. His opponent had nothing left for the final game which Ben claimed superbly 9-1 !! Jonathan Fuller was expecting another battle against Will Newnham, against whom he has won 3-2 in both the recent games that they have clashed. However, this time Jonathan did not allow Will to get into the game and succeeded in winning 3-0. Neil, James and Bradley all played well but were outplayed by their opponents on the day. I guess Neil has got a pretty good excuse as he was playing the U17 England ranked No.1, Tom Pashley but Neil did give him a scare in the third !! Herts lost to Sussex 3- 2 but managed to pick up 7 points for our efforts. Final positions and points are: 1. Sussex 36 2. Hertfordshire 24 3. Norfolk 5 Well played everyone and thanks to all the parents for their support. [Report by: Dudley Fuller, U19 Team Manager]
